Yesterday Ohio voters passed Issue 1, an amendment to the Constitution of the State of Ohio establishing an “individual right” to abortion. Results show 56 percent of voters were in favor of passing the amendment with 2,186,962 votes, and 43 percent of voters against the amendment, with 1,675,728 votes. The new amendment expanding abortion will take effect in 30 days.
Earlier this year, Ohio voters rejected a proposed amendment to increase the voter-approval threshold for new constitutional amendments to 60 percent in the election on August 8. If that had passed, the results of yesterday’s election would not have been sufficient to pass the amendment expanding abortion in Ohio.
