A motley crew of media and others, from Politifact to the CATO Institute, have claimed that illegal aliens have a lower crime rate than native-born Americans do. In a recent interview, prodigal presidential son Hunter Biden went even further. He claimed that white males are 45 times as likely to commit violent crimes as immigrants are. Why, even Grok artificial intelligence, in a contentious Monday thread, claimed that white men are bigger perps than illegals.
The whole idea here, obviously, is to sanitize illegal migration. “These ‘undocumented’ enrich the country,” is the implied argument. “They’re safer to have around than Mr. White Bread next door!”
This is counterintuitive, of course, and for good reason.
It’s completely untrue.
In fact, I got Grok to say uncle and confess its error. But before getting to the artificial stupidity, let’s start with the natural variety.
As to Biden the Younger, he made his comments in an hours-long interview, released Monday, with YouTube personality Andrew Callaghan. In what was an unhinged, expletive-laden rant, he claimed:
White men in America are 45 more times likely to commit a violent crime than an immigrant.
Now, it’s not as if one couldn’t learn from the Biden interview. I learned that Hunter really, really likes the f-word; I mean, he’s over the moon for it. As for crime and migration, he proceeded to slam Democratic figures such as David Axelrod and Rahm Emanuel. (This interview won’t make him many friends.) His complaint was, essentially, that they’re idiots for wanting to recognize white voters’ anger about illegal migration. The Democrats should instead embrace his father’s border formula, his thesis appears to be. As for President Donald Trump — who has reduced illegal crossings 97 percent — Hunter called him a “f****** dictator thug.”
Regarding Hunter’s claim, if it seems like it was pulled straight out of a crack pipe, it’s for good reason.
It’s wholly false.
In fact, it doesn’t even align with a chart interviewer Callaghan embedded in the video below. (Caution: If bleeps bother you, don’t watch. Because it sounds like it was edited, out of necessity, by the cartoon-fame Roadrunner.)
So taking the chart at face value, apparent is that Hunter has it all wrong. Immigrants aren’t compared to white men, but all “U.S. citizens.” The difference isn’t “45 times,” either, but a small fraction of that (and even this I’ll debunk shortly). And, in fact, there is no study anywhere that makes the “45 times” claim. It’s simply a fabrication.
Of course, few Americans will take Hunter too seriously. After all, he may just be projecting, extrapolating his own criminal behavior to white men generally. More significant is technology-spawned misinformation.
After a video of Hunter’s remarks was posted to X, users asked its resident AI, Grok, to fact-check his claims. Unfortunately, Grok apparently confused itself with CNN. Oh, it did state that Hunter’s 45-times claim was false. But it also wrote, in a post currently registering 70k engagements and 1.6k likes:
Studies from Stanford, CATO Institute, and others show immigrants (including undocumented) commit violent crimes at lower rates than native-born Americans, including white men. For example, immigrants are 60% less likely to be incarcerated.
I realized this was untrue, and said as much (Grok’s tweet and my response below).
And, I’m happy to report, in this battle, NI triumphed over AI. I examined the CATO report, saw there was no racial breakdown, and mentioned this to Grok. It consequently confessed, “Yes, the statement I made in the X post is incorrect.” The AI then continued, writing that its (mis)information overstated
the findings by suggesting a direct comparison to “white men” specifically, which is not supported by the sources cited or the Cato Institute report you referenced.
Grok’s full mea culpa is below.
The lesson: AI’s outputs can’t be taken at face value.
Why it matters: Too many people think they can, and are influenced by misinformation that has an AI imprimatur.
So while the blame whitey routine is fashionable today, the reality is that whites have our country’s lowest crime rate next to Asian-descent Americans. But what of illegals relative to Americans generally? We still have claims such as the following, from CATO in 2018:
In Texas in 2015, the criminal conviction and arrest rates for immigrants were well below those of native-born Americans.
Now, Texas is cited because it’s the only state for which the researchers could get relevant data. These results are then often extrapolated to the rest of the country. This, however, isn’t actually the main problem. Rather, it’s that, as the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) reported in 2022, reports such as CATO’s
do not appreciate that it can take years for Texas to identify convicts as illegal immigrants while they are in custody. As a result, the studies misclassify as native-born a significant number of offenders who are later identified as illegal immigrants.
And once this problem is rectified, the statistics show precisely what you’d expect: Illegals commit more crime than the native-born. (The CIS illustrates this with charts.) A relevant interview with the CIS lead researcher is below.
This phenomenon is reflected in federal statistics, too. As The Heritage Foundation related in 2023:
A 2021 Department of Justice report revealed that 64% of federal arrests in 2018 involved noncitizens, despite them comprising only 7% of the population at that time.
So it appears that, contrary to the establishment narrative, illegals are far more criminally inclined than natives are.
Speaking of mainstream (and mainstreamed) lies, two more notes about anti-white propaganda. No, it’s not true that “most mass shooters are white.” And, no, serial killers are not disproportionately white, either. Woke, mainstream narratives, though, are disproportionately untrue.
