Derek Chauvin, who was convicted of second-degree unintentional murder in the death of George Floyd and sentenced to 22 and one-half years in prison, was stabbed by another inmate Friday at a federal prison in Tucson, Arizona. Seriously injured, he was given life-saving measures before being taken to a hospital. The Minneapolis attorney general’s office said today that it was told that Chauvin is in stable condition.

Last Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear Chauvin’s appeal of his conviction. The appeal was based on Chauvin’s claim that he did not get a fair trial in Minneapolis.

Chauvin is also seeking to overturn his conviction that he had violated Floyd’s civil rights. He had pleaded guilty in this case, but is now saying he would not have done so if he had known about new evidence that has come to light that indicates that Floyd died as a result of a drug overdose, not as a result of Chauvin’s actions.
