Fallout continues from the victory of “democratic socialist” Zohran Mamdani in Tuesday’s Democratic mayoral primary in New York City.
Some top Democrats say the win is a gift to the GOP; others say he’s too radical for the city. And that problem likely won’t improve as the Ugandan immigrant’s past writings continue to surface. Mamdani believes New York cops are racist, and he hates America’s past. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), he says in the lingo of the kooky Left, is “fascist.”
That explains why President Trump called him a “100% communist lunatic.” And why Republicans can’t wait to hang him around the neck of every Democratic candidate in 2026. Problem for the Democrats: He could very well become the next mayor.
Moderate Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania likely summarized what many Democrats think of Mamdani’s rise to power: “I’d describe it as Christmas in July for the GOP,” Fetterman said.
Democratic Representative Laura Gillen of New York thinks Mamdani just got off the train from Loonville.
“Socialist Zohran Mamdani is too extreme to lead New York City. His entire campaign has been built on unachievable promises and higher taxes, which is the last thing New York needs,” she wrote on X:
Beyond that, Mr. Mamdani has called to defund the police and has demonstrated a deeply disturbing pattern of unacceptable antisemitic comments which stoke hate at a time when antisemitism is skyrocketing. He is the absolute wrong choice for New York.
Mamdani claims that he won’t defund the police. That aside, though, his policies, as The New American reported yesterday, are a cornucopia of kooky, far-left “ideas”: freezing rent, “free” child care, “free” public transportation, and a minimum wage of $30 per hour.
“I had serious concerns about Assemblyman Mamdani before yesterday, and that is one of the reasons I endorsed his opponent,” Democratic Representative Tom Suozzi of New York wrote on X. “Those concerns remain.” Suozzi endorsed former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Moderate Democrats fear Mamdani, The Washington Post reported. Kate deGruyter, communications director for the Democrats’ Third Way outfit, told the Post that “the Republican ad-makers and graphic designers are having a great morning.”
Indeed, she said, “the Republican Party will work very hard to suggest that every Democrat is a socialist tied to extreme ideas. It’s a playbook they have run before and know well, and they now have a lot of fresh new content.” The newspaper continued:
She suggested that other Democrats should follow the lead of those who have already distanced themselves from Mamdani.
“Silence is not our friend,” deGruyter said. “You’re seeing Democrats already com[ing] out and making clear to voters where they have deep concerns and where they oppose the extremes of the far left.”
Republicans appreciate the gift.
“Vulnerable House Democrats are learning the hard way: when you lie down with socialists, you wake up in a political nightmare you helped create,” said Mike Marinella, spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee. “Every single one of them is a proud part of the pro-criminal, antisemitic, defund-the-police, open border, socialist party.”
Top New York business leaders, The New York Times reported today, met with incumbent and independent candidate Mayor Eric Adams last night to formulate a plan to stop Mamdani. And they are likely worried about more than just his policies.
Mamdani’s radical statements place him smack dab in the middle of the far-left fever swamp.
“The NYPD is racist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety,” he wrote in 2020. But immigrant Mamdani — a citizen for less than 10 years — doesn’t just hate the cops. He hates American heroes.
“In 2017, NYC ordered a review of public works constituting ‘symbols of hate’ for potential removal,” he wrote the same year:
But a statue of Columbus remains in Astoria, in defiance of the values of humanity, empathy & justice that we stand for.
It has to go.
In his mayoral primary campaign, he vowed to “kick the ‘fascist ICE’ out of New York City.” His campaign platform promises that New York will be “the strongest sanctuary city in the country,” his website says. He will “get ICE out of all City facilities and end any cooperation” with them, and “will increase funding for immigration legal services to provide representation for people and communities targeted by mass deportation.”
Border czar Tom Homan had a reply. “Good luck with that,” he told Fox talker Larry Kudlow:
Federal law trumps him every day, every hour of every minute. We’re going to be in New York City. Matter of fact, because it’s a sanctuary city. President Trump made it clear a week and a half ago, we’re going to double down and triple down on sanctuary cities.
He said New York releases illegal-alien criminals onto the streets “every day,” which means Immigration and Customs Enforcement must send “whole teams” into the streets to find them.
And he promised “additional teams” in sanctuary cities, telling Kudlow:
We’re going to concentrate in sanctuary cities because we know they’re releasing public safety threats and national security threats back to the street, so we know we’ve got a problem there.
He vowed to “to send more agents to the neighborhood” and “increase worksite enforcement tenfold. … So game on, we’re coming.”
Trump summarized the rise of Mamdani for not only Republicans, who are overjoyed about his victory, but also Democrats, many of whom fear for the party’s prospects.
“It’s finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line,” Trump wrote on Truth Social:
Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor. We’ve had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous. He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he’s not very smart, he’s got AOC+3, Dummies ALL, backing him, and even our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer, is groveling over him. Yes, this is a big moment in the History of our Country!
