NextImg:Zamir leads shuffle in General Staff with series of promotions

The Israel Defense Forces on Tuesday evening announced seven senior appointments to the General Staff, the IDF’s top brass.

The appointments made by Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir were approved by Defense Minister Israel Katz, and the officers will enter their respective roles in the coming months, the military said. Such promotions in the General Staff are routine after officers complete their tenure.

Leading the round of appointments was the promotion of Maj. Gen. Rafi Milo to head the Northern Command, replacing Maj. Gen. Ori Gordin.

Milo currently heads the Home Front Command, a role he has held since 2022, and fresh off Israel’s 12-day war with Iran, which saw the unit call up its entire reserve personnel to respond to ballistic missile impacts across the country.

Gordin was not given a new role, and he was instead expected to take a break from the military for academic studies and later contend for the role of deputy chief of staff.

Replacing Milo as Home Front Command chief was Brig. Gen. Shai Klepper, who would be promoted to the rank of major general upon entering the role, the military said.

Klepper is the former commander of the 91st “Galilee” Regional Division, responsible for the Lebanon border, from Rosh Hanikra up to, but not including, Mount Dov. He served in the role from 2022 until January 2025, including during major fighting against the Hezbollah terror group.

Next on the list was Maj. Gen. Dan Goldfus, appointed as the next chief of the Depth Corps, replacing Maj. Gen. Nimrod Aloni. The Depth Corps is a shadowy multidisciplinary unit responsible for military operations beyond Israel’s borders.

Goldfus currently heads the Northern Corps, a relatively junior role in the General Staff. He has been in the role since May 2024, after commanding the 98th Division during months of operations in Gaza.

He was promoted, now twice, despite receiving a “severe reprimand” by former chief of staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi for off-script remarks directed at Israel’s political leaders during a press conference.

The Northern Corps is a unit only activated in wartime to operate troops on a tactical level, while freeing the regional command to engage in planning and strategy.

Goldfus was also briefly responsible for the Multi-Domain Joint Maneuver Array, a unit in the Ground Forces that was shuttered in late 2024, following a decision made before the war.

Maj. Gen. Hidai Zilberman, Israel’s defense attaché to the US since 2021, was appointed as head of the Planning and Force Design Directorate, replacing Vice Adm. Eyal Harel. Zilberman previously served as IDF spokesperson.

Harel was among several senior naval officers expected to contend to be the next chief of the Israeli Navy.

Additionally, the IDF announced that Brig. Gen. Dan Noyman, the commander of the Command and Staff College, was appointed as the next head of the Military Colleges.

Noyman would also replace Aloni, who had headed both the Military Colleges and the Depth Corps.

Meanwhile, Brig. Gen. Yaki Dolf, the commander of the West Bank division, was appointed as the next chief of the Northern Corps, replacing Goldfus.

Dolf was reprimanded over the deaths of two soldiers in separate incidents in recent years.

Finally, Brig. Gen. Rami Abudraham, chief of staff at the IDF Ground Forces, would be appointed as head of the Technological and Logistics Directorate, replacing Maj. Gen. Mishel Yanko, who has served in the role since 2021.

Noyman, Dolf, and Abudraham would all be promoted to major general upon entering their roles.

It was only the second time that Zamir, since entering the role of chief of staff in March, had led a shakeup in the General Staff. On his first day on the job, he appointed new Southern Command and Operations Directorate chiefs.

Zamir still has to decide, with Katz’s approval, on the next chiefs of the Israeli Air Force, Israeli Navy, and Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, as well as the next military attaché to the US.

Separately, Katz approved the promotion of Brig. Gen. Eran Ofir, a senior official in the Defense Ministry, to the rank of major general.

Ofir has been in charge of the ministry’s borders and defensive barriers department for more than two decades.

Zamir and ministry director general Amir Baram promoted Ofir for his ongoing lengthy service in the role, a statement said.
