NextImg:Trump’s pick for Mideast adviser, touted as billionaire lawyer, actually neither

Massad Boulos, whom US President-elect Donald Trump has said he will tap as senior adviser on Arab and Middle Eastern Affairs, has no connection to the billion-dollar company that bears his last name, nor is he a lawyer, as Trump presented him to be, The New York Times reported Thursday.

A Lebanese Christian, Boulos — who is the father-in-law of Tiffany Trump, the president-elect’s daughter –immigrated to Texas as a teenager.

He was a central figure in the Trump campaign’s push for Arab-American voters in swing states such as Michigan, representing the campaign in Arabic-language interviews, and reportedly winning plaudits from community leaders.

After the election, he was lauded by Trump as “an accomplished lawyer and highly respected leader in the business world” — a description echoed in media reports about the appointment, which discussed his supposed family business, Boulos Enterprises.

Asked in an October interview whether reports were correct that the company was a “multibillion-dollar enterprise,” the Trump associate responded affirmatively.

He did not mention, however, that he has no connection to the company, which takes its name from a different Boulos family. Asked why he didn’t correct the record, the Lebanese-American businessman reportedly answered that he made a practice of not commenting on his business.

In fact, Boulos is chief executive of a Nigeria-based company controlled by his father-in-law that sells trucks and heavy machinery, which is valued at about $865,000 and made less than $66,000 in profit last year, according to the Times. Boulos’s personal stake in the company is valued at $1.53.

In addition, Boulos has been involved in various small business ventures in Nigeria, including a restaurant, several inactive construction firms and Tantra Beverages, a company that advertised an “erotic drink” that “gives men and women the ultimate stimulating push.”

Boulos, who said an associate manages the restaurant, initially denied any familiarity with the beverage company, then said he did remember it, as a brief attempt to sell energy drinks, the Times said.

He also said that any significant wealth he possesses came to him by way of his wife, Sarah Fadoul Boulos, the report added.

Boulos also does not appear to be a lawyer, as Trump and several profiles described him to be.

ABC News reported that he received a law degree from the University of Houston, but the school had no record of him, the Times said. Boulos had in fact graduated from the University of Houston-Downtown, a different school, with an undergraduate degree in business administration.

In addition to his role in the Trump campaign’s outreach efforts, Boulos has also served as Trump’s conduit to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, and has been involved in discussions on policy regarding his own native Lebanon.
