A Palestinian man was shot and killed by an Israeli soldier at a junction near a West Bank settlement Thursday morning, according to rescue officials and Hebrew media reports.
A knife was found in the man’s bag after he was killed, but Israeli officials were reportedly unsure if he had indeed posed a threat.
Details surrounding the incident remained unclear, and there was no official comment from the military. The man was not identified in Israeli or Palestinian reports.
According to Hatzala-Rescuers Without Borders, the man was questioned by a reserves soldier after getting out of a Palestinian taxi at a bus stop near the settlement of Elazar, south of Jerusalem.
At some point, the rescue service said, the soldier activated a military procedure for stopping a suspect, shooting him in the lower body and mortally wounding him. Reports indicated that he had raised the soldier’s suspicions.
The Palestinian WAFA news agency confirmed that a Palestinian was killed, citing the Red Crescent rescue service.
Reports in Hebrew language media indicated that more than one soldier was guarding the bus stop, and that the shooting occurred following an altercation, which may have developed as the man attempted to board a bus used by Israelis.
According to the Kan public broadcaster, the knife was found in the man’s bag after he was shot, and it was unclear whether he had planned to use it or threatened the soldiers.
Security forces in Jerusalem and the West Bank are on high alert due to the Ramadan Muslim holy month, amid fears that tensions could ramp up as the war against the Hamas terror group continues in Gaza.
On Tuesday a gunman opened fire on two Shin Bet security service officers between the settlement of Migdal Oz and the Gush Etzion Junction, some two kilometers (1.2 miles) from the Elazar bus stop.
The pair returned fire at the gunman, “neutralizing” him, the Shin Bet and Israel Defense Forces said. One of the officers was seriously injured, and both were taken to a hospital in Jerusalem for treatment.
Palestinians say over 400 people have been killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank since hostilities broke out with the Hamas terror group in Gaza on October 7, most while carrying out attacks or during clashes with IDF troops.
