A search and rescue mission was launched on the Greek island of Crete on Saturday for a missing Israeli woman who was last seen on June 4.
The woman, identified in media reports as 65-year-old Michal Peleg, was last seen near her home in the Cretan village of Kavousi on Wednesday, and attempts to contact her since have been unsuccessful.
Family members told the Walla news site that Peleg is active, often going on hikes in the area surrounding her village and swimming in the ocean.
“She always keeps in touch by phone, and it was unusual for her to disappear like that,” Peleg’s former brother-in-law told the news outlet. “We’re worried that she got into some sort of trouble while traveling in the area. Time isn’t working in our favor.”
He said that the Israeli expat community in Crete had come to the family’s assistance and joined the search for Peleg.
The Foreign Ministry said on Saturday evening that it, along with the Israeli embassy in Greece, was in contact with Peleg’s family and with local Greek police to coordinate search efforts.
“We hope that the missing woman will be found safe and sound soon,” it said.
Israeli insurance company Harel, which provides Peleg’s insurance, has also dispatched a three-person search and rescue team to the Greek island on Saturday to join efforts to locate her.
A member of the team said that they were searching for her on foot, as well as with drones and other technological aids.
“We are in continuous and direct contact with the insured’s family and the Israeli Foreign Ministry,” he said.
