French President Emmanuel Macron was prevented from making his way through New York on Monday night after delivering his speech recognizing a Palestinian state, because he was blocked by police officers keeping the streets clear for President Donald Trump’s motorcade.
“I’m sorry, president, I’m really sorry, it’s just that everything’s frozen right now,” one of the police officers is seen telling Macron in footage filmed by French media, as they face off at a barrier. “There’s a motorcade coming right now.”
“I don’t see it,” Macron replies. “Let me cross.”
Reports said Macron was in his own official motorcade when stopped.
Macron then called Trump directly: “How are you?” Macron is heard saying. “Guess what? I’m waiting in the street because everything is frozen for you!”
French media said Trump was indeed on the other end of the line, and a French official confirmed this to The Associated Press.
Macron explained to the officers that he was attempting to reach France’s diplomatic mission in New York, following his speech at the United Nations, in which he announced that France was formally recognizing Palestinian statehood.
French media reported that Macron was permitted to continue on foot a few minutes later and had to make a half-hour walk to the French legation.
Since he had Trump’s ear, Macron used the opportunity to keep chatting.
“I would love this weekend to have a short discussion with Qatar and you on the situation in Gaza,” he said.
