Some 150 Israeli high school students making their way to Poland became stranded for over 12 hours in a Turkish airport on Monday after their plane had been forced to make an emergency landing, with parents voicing concern for their wellbeing before they finally took off and made it to their destination.

The plane, reportedly operated by Polish airline Enter Air, was carrying 12th-grade students from five schools, when it made the emergency landing in Antalya due to engine issues.

The students’ wait at the airport was extended, after a second plane dispatched to take them was also found to have technical problems.

While they were stranded in Poland, the students and their teachers waited in a secure area of the airport, and their protection was overseen by the Shin Bet security agency, according to a Tuesday morning statement by Education Minister Yoav Kisch.

Some parents expressed frustration and raised fears for the students’ safety, given Turkey’s hostile attitude toward Israel, during the war in Gaza.

While the students were still stranded on Monday, the mother of one 12th grader was quoted by the Ynet news site calling the situation a “disgrace.”

“The kids left for this trip last night at midnight and have been strewn on the floor exhausted since the morning with no idea what’s going on,” she said. “The kids waited for this trip, we paid NIS 8,000 [$2,145]… we’re very worried and anxious because they’re stuck in a country that hates Israel so much.”

Eventually, a plane picked up the students and landed in Poland on Tuesday morning, Kisch said on social media.

“The youth delegation landed safely in Poland in the past hour,” Kisch posted on X at 6:46 a.m. “The delegation is on its way to the hotel in buses.”

The students are visiting Poland to see Nazi concentration camps and learn about the Holocaust. Many high schools in Israel organize such trips.
