TEHRAN, Iran — Iranian forces confronted a US destroyer in the Gulf of Oman on Wednesday, warning it to stay out of waters claimed by Tehran, state television reported.
The encounter was the latest confrontation between the US and Iran following the 12-day air war last month between Israel and the Islamic Republic. The US joined that conflict, bombing Iran’s nuclear enrichment facilities, and Iran responded with an attack on an American military base in Qatar.
Iranian state TV said that an Iranian army helicopter flew over the USS Fitzgerald at about 10 a.m. local time on Wednesday morning, after the vessel “attempted to approach the waters under the supervision” of Iran.
The destroyer issued threats of its own, the broadcaster said, but “the Iranian pilot… reiterated the warning to stay away from Iranian waters,” forcing the US vessel to “give in” and alter its course.
There was no immediate comment from the US Navy.
A video released by Iranian state TV showed a destroyer from what seems to be a helicopter window. In the video, the pilot calls on the vessel to “change course” and avoid approaching Iranian territorial waters.
Iranian forces have a history of confronting US forces in bodies of water off the country’s southern coast, such as the Gulf of Oman. In 2023, Tehran said it forced a US submarine to surface while crossing the strategic Strait of Hormuz — a claim Washington denied.
Before the conflict in June, the US and Iran had held negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, which Israel and the US maintain is meant to produce a bomb. Iran has insisted that the program is peaceful but has enriched uranium to levels that have no peaceful application, obstructed international inspectors from checking its nuclear facilities, and expanded its ballistic missile capabilities.
