NextImg:IDF to deploy reinforcements in West Bank in preparation for Jewish holiday season

The Israel Defense Forces will bolster its presence in the West Bank with eight additional companies during the upcoming Jewish holiday season, military officials said on Saturday, in light of heightened security risks.

The additional companies will be deployed on Sunday and will remain in the West Bank until after the holidays in mid-October, the officials said.

With the additional troops in place, the Judea and Samaria Division will be staffed by the equivalent of 23 battalions.

The move comes amid tensions in the West Bank following a deadly attack in Jerusalem earlier this month carried out by two Palestinian terrorists.

Six people were killed in the attack at Jerusalem’s Ramot junction, and several more were wounded.

Another deadly attack took place at Allenby Crossing this week, though that area is under the responsibility of the 96th “Gilad” Division.

The perpetrator of Thursday’s attack at Allenby Crossing, between the West Bank and Jordan, arrived at the crossing from the Jordanian side and opened fire at soldiers using a handgun.

He then got out of the truck and, after his gun apparently jammed, stabbed two soldiers repeatedly until security guards at the crossing opened fire at him, killing him on the spot.

The slain soldiers were named as: Lt. Col. (res.) Yitzhak Harosh, 68, a reservist in the Civil Administration from Jerusalem, and Sgt. Oran Hershko, 20, a liaison officer with foreign forces in the IDF’s Tevel international cooperation unit, from Tel Mond.

The crossing was closed on Thursday to pedestrian and cargo traffic, but was set to reopen to pedestrian traffic only on Sunday.

Separately on Friday, the IDF said it had caught a Palestinian terror cell in the Ramallah area of the West Bank that had been building rockets intended to be launched at Israeli targets.

In recent years, there have been several attempts by Palestinian terror groups to develop and launch crude rockets from the West Bank at Israeli settlements and at Israel, though with little to no success.
