An Israel Defense Forces soldier critically wounded last week in southern Gaza’s Rafah succumbed to his injuries over the weekend, the military announced Sunday.

The slain soldier was named as Sgt. Yonatan Aharon Greenblatt, 21, of the Givati Brigade’s Shaked Battalion, from Beit Shemesh.

Greenblatt was hit by an anti-tank projectile fired at a building he was in in Rafah on July 20, and taken to a hospital in critical condition.

His death brings Israel’s toll in the ground offensive against Hamas in Gaza and in military operations along the border with the Strip to 331.

Further north, in the Netzarim Corridor area of central Gaza, the IDF’s 252nd Reserve Division replaced the 99th Division, the military said Saturday.

The corridor, built around a road south of Gaza City, enables the IDF to carry out raids in northern and central Gaza while controlling access to the north for Palestinians seeking to return after fleeing south. It also enables Israel to coordinate deliveries of humanitarian aid directly to northern Gaza.

The 252nd Division is operating in the corridor with two brigades and an artillery regiment. The division was previously deployed to Gaza during the initial stages of the ground offensive.

In recent days, the IDF said reservists with the 252nd Division killed dozens of terror operatives, demolished hundreds of sites belonging to terror groups, and located tunnels that are currently being investigated.

The war erupted on October 7 when Hamas led a devastating cross-border attack on southern Israel that killed 1,200 people. The estimated 3,000 terrorists who burst through the boundary also abducted 251 people as hostages to Gaza.

Israel responded with a military offensive to destroy Hamas, return the hostages, and prevent Gaza from posing a security threat going forward.

The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 39,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far, though the toll cannot be verified and does not differentiate between civilians and fighters. Israel says it has killed some 15,000 combatants in battle and some 1,000 terrorists inside Israel during the October 7 attack.
