NextImg:IDF seizes makeshift rockets, firearms in raid near West Bank’s Tulkarem

Security forces seized makeshift rockets and other weapons during an overnight raid in the Nur Shams refugee camp near Tulkarem in the West Bank, the military said Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Palestinians reported that two people had been shot dead by army forces during a raid and clashes in the city of Hebron. The military did not immediately comment.

The discovery was not the first time rockets have been located in the West Bank. Throughout the year, there have been several failed attempted launches of rockets from Jenin, and troops have found makeshift rockets in the city. However, such a discovery in Tulkarem is noteworthy, as it is far closer to Israel’s major population centers in the Tel Aviv metropolitan area.

Security forces operating in the camp detained wanted Palestinians and seized explosives, including dozens of primed IEDs, and other equipment at an explosives lab, according to the military.

One soldier was lightly wounded during clashes with Palestinian gunmen amid the operation, the IDF said. The soldier was hurt by shrapnel after gunmen opened fire and hurled explosives at troops, it said.

The building housing the explosives lab was later destroyed in a controlled manner by combat engineers, the army said.

One suspect living in the building was detained, as were seven other suspects.

In May, Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar said security forces had foiled attempts by Palestinians in the northern West Bank to manufacture rockets to be launched at Israel. Bar said the efforts were led by a senior Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader who was killed by Israel in the Gaza Strip during a five-day flareup in violence that month.

Elsewhere in the West Bank Tuesday, soldiers shot dead two Palestinians —  aged 17 and 31 — during a military raid at the Fawwar refugee camp near Hebron, the Palestinian health ministry said.

The army did not offer an immediate comment.

A resident from the camp told AFP that troops stormed the camp from its southern and northern entrances.

“The two men were killed just outside their homes,” he said, asking to remain anonymous over security concerns.

He said after the death of the first man there were clashes in which five others were wounded and one of them later died.

It was not clear whether one or both of the men killed were gunmen or otherwise involved in the clashes.

Violence in the West Bank has soared since October 7, when thousands of Hamas-led terrorists burst into Israel from the land, air and sea in a shock assault in which they massacred more than 1,200 people and seized some 240 hostages.

In response to the deadliest attack in the country’s history, Israel vowed to eliminate Hamas from the Gaza Strip, where the terror group has ruled since 2007.

Since October 7, troops have arrested more than 2,550 wanted Palestinians across the West Bank, including more than 1,300 affiliated with Hamas.

According to the Palestinian Authority health ministry, some 300 West Bank Palestinians have been killed in that time.

Based on military estimates, the vast majority of those killed since October 7 were shot dead during clashes amid arrest raids, and many of them, according to data seen by The Times of Israel, were armed with either a firearm or an explosive device.

The IDF is aware of at least three cases of uninvolved Palestinians being killed by troops in recent weeks, and a handful of cases of settlers killing Palestinians, which are still under investigation.
