The Israel Defense Forces determined on Monday that an impact in Haifa a day before that occurred without warning sirens sounding was not a failed air defense interceptor as initially suspected, but an Iranian ballistic missile that was not detected correctly.
The Iranian missile hit a public square in a residential area of the city. Three people were lightly hurt, including one who was relatively close to the impact site.
There was a “pinpoint technical failure” with the detection of the missile’s warhead, according to a Home Front Command and Israeli Air Force investigation.
Therefore, no sirens sounded and no interceptors were launched to shoot the missile down.
The military said there was no failure in the Home Front Command’s alert system, but rather only in the detection of the missile by the Israeli Air Force.
According to the investigation, the Iranian missile split from its warhead midair, and interceptors were launched only at the back section. The warhead itself went undetected and hit Haifa.
The Home Front Command had issued an early warning via the cell broadcast system in Haifa, which it said helped prevent further harm, as most people were seeking shelter even without sirens sounding.
The missile itself was not unusual, according to the probe, and was similar to others fired by Iran at Israel amid the war. The incident appears to have been an anomaly.
The military said it drew “several lessons that will be implemented immediately.”
“The IDF continuously learns lessons and reiterates that the defense is not hermetic,” it added.
The strike in Haifa came amid a barrage of 27 missiles from Iran Sunday morning, with impacts in residential areas of Tel Aviv and Ness Tziona. Some 86 people were injured.
Iran has been firing missiles at Israel in response to Israel’s sweeping assault on Iran’s top military leaders, nuclear scientists, uranium enrichment sites, and ballistic missile program, which it says is necessary to prevent the Islamic Republic from realizing its avowed plan to destroy the Jewish state.
Iran, which avowedly seeks Israel’s destruction, has consistently denied seeking to acquire nuclear weapons. However, it has enriched uranium to levels that have no peaceful application, obstructed international inspectors from checking its nuclear facilities, and expanded its ballistic missile capabilities. Israel says Iran has recently taken steps toward weaponization.
Iran has retaliated to Israel’s attacks by launching over 500 ballistic missiles and around 1,000 drones at Israel.
So far, Iran’s missile attacks have killed 24 people and wounded thousands in Israel, according to health officials and hospitals. Some of the missiles that have not been intercepted by air defenses have hit apartment buildings, a university and a hospital, causing heavy damage.
