NextImg:IDF dismisses soldier caught on camera repeatedly kicking Palestinian in West Bank

A reservist soldier who was seen repeatedly kicking a Palestinian man in the West Bank town of Dura, near Hebron, this week and another troop standing with him were dismissed from duty, the Israel Defense Forces said Monday.

The IDF said a Military Police investigation has also been opened into their actions.

The video from a surveillance camera showed two soldiers approaching the man, reported to be a bakery worker named Abd al-Hadi Masharaqa, and ordering him to sit on the floor. One soldier is then seen showing the man something on a mobile phone, before kicking him repeatedly. The second soldier stood by.

“The IDF views the behavior of a soldier that is inconsistent with IDF values gravely,” the military said in response to a query.

“The soldiers were suspended from duty, and their reserve service was immediately suspended,” the IDF added.

Several incidents of abuse have been filmed and uploaded online, sometimes by soldiers themselves, amid escalating tensions in the West Bank between Palestinian and Israeli security forces and settlers since October 7, 2023.

A year ago, the IDF suspended two reservist soldiers from their roles after one of them filmed and uploaded a video of the other reading sections of the Talmud — as a mock lesson — to three bound Palestinians in the West Bank.

In another brutal clip, shortly after the October 7, 2023, massacre, IDF soldiers filmed themselves as they abused seven West Bank laborers who were caught as they attempted to enter Israel without a permit, in an area south of the South Hebron hills.

The footage shows the Palestinian men stripped naked or half-naked, blindfolded and handcuffed, and screaming in pain. One of them is being dragged on the ground.

A screenshot from the video shows a soldier stepping with his boot on the head of one of the Palestinians, while another is pointing a weapon at him.

In Gaza, IDF troops have posted videos of themselves looting and damaging property during operations.

Since October 7, 2023, troops have arrested some 6,000 wanted Palestinians across the West Bank, including more than 2,350 affiliated with Hamas.

According to the Palestinian Authority health ministry, nearly 1,000 West Bank Palestinians have been killed in that time. The IDF says the vast majority of them were gunmen killed in exchanges of fire, rioters who clashed with troops or terrorists carrying out attacks.

During the same period, 62 others, including Israeli security personnel, have been killed in terror attacks in Israel and the West Bank. Another eight members of the security forces were killed in clashes with terror operatives in the West Bank.
