Germany said Sunday it was reinforcing security around Israeli and Jewish sites in its territory against possible reprisal attacks by Iran.

“We are also preparing ourselves in Germany in case Iran targets Israeli or Jewish institutions,” Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced to reporters before flying out to attend a G7 summit in Canada.

France has already ordered similar measures on its territory amid Israel’s operations against Iranian nuclear and military sites and the Islamic Republic’s retaliatory attacks.

Ahead of the summit on Sunday, Merz said he hoped an agreement could be reached between the G7 countries toward the resolution of the ongoing war between Israel and Iran.

He said he expected the Middle East conflict to be high on the agenda, laying out four points he hoped participating governments would be able to agree upon.

The four points were: that Iran cannot develop or possess nuclear weapons; that Israel has the right to defend itself against existential threats, which he said Iran’s nuclear program represented; that the conflict should not escalate; and that scope for diplomacy must be created.

Earlier, Merz stressed that Iran must never obtain a nuclear weapon during a phone call with Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tariq Al Said.

“The chancellor expressed his gratitude for Oman’s mediation efforts aimed at ending Iran’s nuclear program and emphasized that Iran must never be allowed to possess nuclear weapons,” German government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius wrote.

“Both leaders agreed that the current priority is to prevent a further escalation of the conflict. They reaffirmed their willingness to contribute to ending the conflict through diplomatic means,” concluded the readout.

Oman confirmed Saturday that the planned sixth round of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States in Muscat on Sunday would not take place following Israel’s surprise attack on Iranian nuclear and military sites.

The conflict between Iran and Israel won’t be the only subject discussed during the G7 summit, Merz said to reporters before boarding his plane. The chancellor said the war in Ukraine will also be discussed with a view of putting more pressure on Russia to bring it to the negotiating table. To that end, he added, European leaders wanted to agree to new sanctions on Moscow at the end of this month.

Merz said economic issues would also be on the agenda and said efforts would be directed toward reaching an agreement over tariffs following the Trump administration’s decision earlier this year — currently suspended — to impose them on its key trade partners.
