Jordanian police said Saturday that the Allenby Bridge Border Crossing with the West Bank would reopen to pedestrian traffic on Sunday, following its closure on Thursday after a Jordanian assailant killed two Israeli soldiers there.

The crossing remains closed to cargo, including Gaza-bound aid deliveries, until further notice.

The bridge, which is the West Bank’s sole crossing with Jordan, was shuttered Thursday afternoon after a Jordanian man driving a Gaza-bound aid truck carried out a shooting and stabbing attack against Israeli troops at the crossing.

The assailant opened fire at the two Israeli soldiers, then got out of the truck and, after his gun jammed, stabbed them repeatedly until security guards at the crossing opened fire at him, killing him on the spot, the military said.

No terror group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, which Jordan has condemned and vowed to investigate.

Following the attack, Israel halted aid deliveries for Gaza through the Allenby crossing. Aid will continue flowing to Gaza through other routes, Israeli officials said.

According to Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, since the war in Gaza was sparked by the Hamas onslaught of October 7, 2023, nearly 10,000 trucks of aid, or over 144,000 tons, have been transferred to the Gaza Strip from Jordan using land crossings with Israel and the West Bank. The figure represents some 7% of all aid deliveries to the Strip.
