Five Palestinian gunmen were killed in an Israeli drone strike and in clashes with troops in the northern West Bank city of Jenin on Friday morning, Palestinian health officials and the military said.

In a brief statement, the Israel Defense Forces said troops had surrounded a building in Jenin where several terror operatives were holed up, and were exchanging fire with them.

The IDF said that amid the clashes, a drone strike was carried out against several gunmen. Since October 7, the IDF has carried out some 55 airstrikes in the West Bank, using drones, attack helicopters, and fighter jets.

The military said it would provide further details at a later time.

The official Palestinian Wafa news agency reported that Israeli troops fired several shoulder-launched missiles at the building and called on the occupants over loudspeakers to surrender.

The Palestinian Authority health ministry said five people were killed and another was seriously wounded by Israeli fire in Jenin.

The ministry named the slain men as Ahmed Amouri, 20, Qusay Hazouz, 23, Fouad Ashqar, 25, Yassin al-Aridi, 30 and Muhammad Jabareen, 54.

Images posted to social media showed some of the men brandishing assault rifles, indicating they were members of local terror groups in Jenin. Another picture of al-Aridi’s body showed him wearing a headband with the logo of Hamas’s military wing.

Tensions have been high in the West Bank amid the war in the Gaza Strip, which began on October 7 when thousands of Hamas terrorists attacked southern Israel under a barrage of rockets fired at population centers all over the country. They brutally killed some 1,200 people, amid instances of torture and rape, and seized 251 hostages.

Since October 7, troops have arrested some 4,200 wanted Palestinians across the West Bank, including more than 1,750 affiliated with Hamas.

According to the Palestinian Authority health ministry, more than 560 West Bank Palestinians have been killed in that time. The IDF says the vast majority of them were gunmen killed during raids or terrorists carrying out attacks.

During the same period, 22 Israelis, including security personnel, have been killed in terror attacks in Israel and the West Bank. Another five members of the security forces were killed in clashes with terror operatives in the West Bank.
