NextImg:4 Palestinian gunmen killed in West Bank gunfight; IDF reservist moderately hurt

Four Palestinian gunmen were killed and an Israeli reservist was moderately wounded in an overnight gun battle during an army raid in the West Bank town of Azzun, the military said Tuesday morning.

The Israel Defense Forces said troops of the 8211th Reserve Battalion were carrying out a counterterror operation in the town when they came under fire by Palestinian gunmen.

Four terror operatives opened fire and hurled explosive devices at the troops from a building. The soldiers engaged, killing the four gunmen, and seized three makeshift “Carlo” submachine guns, the IDF said.

The IDF said one reservist officer was moderately wounded in the gun battle and was taken to a hospital for further treatment.

The Palestinian Authority health ministry named the four gunmen as Walid Ismail Walid Radwan, 18, Qusay Jamal Salim Salah, 21, Iyad Ahmed Mustafa Shubaita, 22, and Muhammad Abdel Fattah Othman Radwan, 26.

The ministry claimed Israeli authorities were holding their bodies.

In a separate overnight raid, the IDF said reservists operating in the Palestinian city of Qalqilya shot a gunman who had opened fire at them with a handgun. The IDF said the gunman was “neutralized,” without elaborating on his condition.

No soldiers were wounded in that incident, the IDF said.

Elsewhere in the West Bank, IDF troops and Border Police officers detained seven wanted Palestinians, the military said.

Violence in the West Bank has soared since October 7, when thousands of Hamas-led terrorists burst into Israel from Gaza by land, air and sea in a shock assault in which they massacred more than 1,200 people and seized some 240 hostages. In response to the deadliest attack in the country’s history, Israel vowed to eliminate Hamas from the Gaza Strip, where the terror group has ruled since 2007.

Since October 7, troops have arrested more than 2,550 wanted Palestinians across the West Bank, including more than 1,300 affiliated with Hamas. According to the Palestinian Authority health ministry, some 300 West Bank Palestinians have been killed in that time.

Based on military estimates, the vast majority of those killed since October 7 were shot during clashes amid arrest raids, and many of them, according to data seen by The Times of Israel, were armed with either a firearm or an explosive device.

The IDF is aware of at least three cases of uninvolved Palestinians being killed by troops in recent months, and a handful of cases of settlers killing Palestinians, which are still under investigation.
