Volodymyr Zelensky said he hoped Donald Trump can bring about peace in Ukraine after the Republican candidate declared victory in the US election.
The Ukrainian president said he appreciated Trump’s “‘peace through strength’ approach in global affairs”, adding that it could bring about a “just peace” in the war with Russia.
Mr Zelensky said that Kyiv would continue to rely on bipartisan support in Washington for his country’s war efforts.
Trump previously claimed he would end the war as president-elect and described Mr Zelensky as “one of the greatest salesmen I’ve ever seen”.
Reaction to the poll began trickling in from across the world on Wednesday morning, with Benjamin Netanyahu becoming one of the first leaders to congratulate Trump after he declared victory, describing it as “history’s greatest comeback”.
The Israeli prime minister said Trump’s return to the White House offered a “new beginning for America” and a “powerful recommitment to the great alliance” between the two nations.
