Elon Musk has enraged Twitter users yet again. The world’s richest man, who bought the social media giant for $44bn (£35bn) in December, caused outrage on Saturday after announcing temporary limits on the number of posts users can view.
The decision has led to speculation about fresh technical issues at Twitter and raised questions about the impact on its financial position, given that the social media giant is still heavily reliant on advertising revenue despite Musk’s attempt to create a subscription model.
Musk initially said that verified users – those who pay for its Twitter Blue subscription – would be limited to reading 6,000 posts a day, while unverified accounts would be limited to 600 posts a day and new unverified accounts limited to 300.
In a sign of growing disarray at the social media giant, Musk changed the policy twice within hours, settling on a limit of 10,000 posts per day for verified users, 1,000 posts per day for unverified and 500 posts per day for new unverified users.
Musk described the move as a “temporary emergency measure” but gave no timeline regarding when it will be lifted.
