Donald Trump declared that talks to end the war in Ukraine would begin after his phone call with Vladimir Putin.

His Western allies have long declared there can be no peace in Ukraine without the invaded nation’s involvement in the negotiations.

However, Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, was not included in the call between the presidents of the US and Russia, and that appalled European leaders who were also excluded from the talks.
