Good evening. Britain is poised for recession, ratings agency Moody’s has warned. Meanwhile, Just Stop Oil protestors were dragged from the road this morning following a change in tactics from the Met Police.
Around half of UK mortgage holders will see their rates increase this year as the country heads towards a recession, the ratings agency has warned. Moody’s predicted that the Bank of England will raise rates by another 25 basis points to 4.75 per cent as Threadneedle Street struggles to keep a lid on inflation. Economics Reporter Melissa Lawford reports that increasing mortgage rates have led to the lowest number of house sales since the viewings ban during the pandemic.
Just Stop Oil activists have been dragged along the road by the police for the first time since they began blockading traffic with “slow marches”. Four contingents of the environmental group took to major roads in London this morning in their latest attempt to force ministers to cancel all new oil and gas licences. It follows months of criticism over the Met reprimanding or even arresting members of the public for manhandling demonstrators. An officer was filmed hauling a protester, spread-eagled and clinging on to his orange banner, along the tarmac.
