Andrew Griffith, the Economic Secretary to the Treasury, has asked civil servants to explore adding free speech protections to banking licences, according to Whitehall sources. Louisa Clarence-Smith writes that the move would mean that any bank which discriminates against a customer because of their political beliefs could have their banking licence revoked.

Nigel Farage has demanded an apology from the BBC after it reported that his Coutts bank account was closed for financial, rather than political reasons.
The former Ukip leader has said he will be complaining to the corporation and also said it needed to correct a story published earlier this month that appeared to have been briefed out by Coutts.
