Watch: Tesla driver rescued from freezing Norwegian fjord by passing floating sauna

A Tesla driver who crashed into a freezing Norwegian fjord was rescued by two people in a passing floating sauna.

Footage of the incident showed emergency workers hauling the vehicle out of the water in Oslo shortly after the motorist and his passenger were saved by the sauna users, wearing only towels around their waists.

The car appeared to have been driven off the quay at the Akershusstranda, an area where ships dock at the foot of the Norwegian capital’s picturesque medieval fortress and castle.

A witness told Norway’s VG newspaper that he saw the car stopped, before it suddenly accelerated and ended up in the water.

The paper reported that the driver had thought the vehicle was in park when he hit the accelerator pedal.

As the car went down, the two “screaming” occupants escaped and made it onto the Tesla’s roof as the floating sauna headed towards them.

Nicholay Nordahl, the sauna’s skipper, told VG that he and two French nationals onboard had rescued the couple from the fjord on Thursday.

He said he “gave full throttle toward the people who came climbing out of the car” and reached them just as the car went under.

“With good help from two of the guests, we got them up. They warmed up in the sauna,” Mr Nordahl added.

Vladislav Nikiforov, 51, who witnessed the incident while out for a walk, said the car “jumped” over a barrier in front of the water.

“The car was under the water before the sauna came to them,” Mr Nikiforov said. “They had to swim. It’s incredibly cold, icy water”.

He added it was “very good luck” that the floating sauna was nearby.

“I think they were only in the water for a couple of minutes,” Mr Nikiforov said. “The girl was screaming. She was very desperate.”

The car was later recovered from the water.

Oslo police confirmed on Twitter that two people in the car had been rescued by a passing sauna.

The wooden sauna rafts that operate on the fjord in Oslo are electrically powered, allowing people to take part in the much-loved Scandinavian pastime in peace while enjoying the natural beauty of the area.
