Watch: Taliban fighters rollerblade through potholed streets of Kabul

Speeding through central Kabul, the masked and camouflaged fighters whizz past onlookers and easily overtake other road users.

Hanging onto the side of a pick-up truck to gain speed, they then launch themselves off on their rollerblades to direct traffic.

The scene captured in a recently shared video clip purports to show a detachment of Taliban security forces skating through the Afghan capital.

The Telegraph has not been able to independently verify the film, but Afghan journalists said it appeared genuine, though it is not known when it was filmed.

The Taliban, which toppled Ashraf Ghani’s internationally backed government in August 2021, has often posted propaganda videos of its security forces at work, or conducting drills.

Some police forces around the world have experimented with rollerblades with differing levels of success.

In Paris, a team of eight police on skates has patrolled for years in the French capital, where they pose for selfies with visitors as a friendly face of policing, but also carry truncheons and pistols.

In early 2021, police in Pakistan’s port of Karachi unveiled a 20-strong armed rollerblading unit to pursue criminals in alleyways where cars cannot venture.

London also briefly dabbled with skating police, but the Scotland Yard pilot scheme in the capital’s parks was reportedly cancelled because fugitives were able to escape by running on the grass.

Commentators questioned whether the Taliban would find success with the tactic in Kabul’s streets, which are often gridlocked with traffic and have in the past been notorious for potholes.

The Taliban have maintained a firm grip on Afghanistan since their shock takeover, but their revived emirate remains an international pariah.

The group has imposed their strict interpretation of Islamic law, banning schools for girls beyond the sixth grade and barring women from most public and private sector workplaces, including the United Nations and other aid groups.
