Nasa has released a video of the strongest solar flare emitted by the sun for six years, which temporarily disrupted radio communications on Earth.

The space agency’s Solar Dynamics Observatory caught the X2.8 burst with its cameras on Thursday.

Solar flares are powerful bursts of energy known to impact electric power grids, navigation signals and radio communications, and can pose risks to spacecraft and astronauts.

Multiple pilots reported temporary communications problems around the time the flare was emitted.

In 2003, the strongest ever flare was recorded with a classification of X28.
