Watch: Houthi missile strikes Red Sea cargo ship

Footage has emerged of the moment a Greek-owned cargo ship was struck by a Houthi missile while heading through the Red Sea.

The Malta-flagged vessel, the MT Zografia, was sailing from Vietnam to Israel on Tuesday with 24 crew on board when it was attacked 76 nautical miles northwest of the Yemeni port of Saleef.

An onboard camera captured the impact of the missile, fired by Yemen’s Houthi rebels.

The footage is believed to be the first to have emerged showing a Houthi attack on shipping in the Red Sea.

In the clip, a missile can be seen impacting the vessel close to its bow, causing a large explosion followed by plumes of black smoke.

“There were no injuries, only material damage,” Greek officials said on Tuesday. The bulk carrier was observed to change course to port. It was not carrying any cargo at the time it was hit.

The Iran-backed Houthis have claimed their attacks on Red Sea shipping are a response to Israel’s bombardment of Gaza.

Attacks by the Houthis on ships in the area since November have affected international trade and led to major retaliatory strikes by the US and Britain last week.

As well as disrupting supply chains, there are fears that the Houthi attacks could make it more difficult for governments to keep global inflation in check.
