Watch: Boeing 737 makes emergency landing after wheel explodes

A Boeing 737 was forced to make an emergency landing in South Africa on Sunday after one of its wheels came off shortly after takeoff.

Dramatic footage showed smoke engulfing the aircraft after a loud bang can be heard when the wheel explodes. The plane then continues to screech down the runway before coming to a halt.

The FlySafair flight had only just got off the ground to begin the two hour journey from Johannesburg to Cape Town before ground staff ordered it back when they spotted damage to the aircraft’s undercarriage.

Upon being notified, the pilots made a low pass over the runway so engineers could inspect the damage from the ground where they noticed that one of the four rear wheels had been clipped during the takeoff.

At that point the plane was forced to land.

No one was injured during the incident and all passengers were safely evacuated.

It was the latest incident involving a Boeing aircraft, and came just a month after a similar incident where a United Airlines flight lost a wheel as it was departing San Francisco.

Boeing declined to comment on the Fly Safair incident, telling The New York Post that the airline maintains its own fleet.
