Watch: Bodycam footage shows moment police shot 11-year-old at his Mississippi home

Bodycam footage of the moment an unarmed 11-year-old boy was shot by police despite having his hands in the air has been released by Mississippi officials.

Aderrien Murry had called police to his home in Indianola after his mother’s “irate” former partner showed up at their property.

Footage shows Sergeant Greg Capers walking up to the home with his gun drawn two hours after the call was made.

He can be heard shouting “let me see your hands” repeatedly as he approached the door, while the boy’s mother, Nakala Murry, stood in front of him with her hands raised.

Sgt Capers asked the woman where her ex-partner is and told her to exit the building. Ms Murry has claimed she told the officer he had gone and that her three children were inside the property, although her response was not captured by the bodycam footage.

Officers seemingly believed that the man was still inside and shouted: “Come out sir, don’t make us come in.”

11-year-old Murry, who was 4ft 10in, then began to leave the home with his hands up when Sgt Capers fired a shot into his chest.

Sgt Capers can be heard shouting “oh my God” and calling for medical help.

Murry survived the incident but spent five days in hospital with a collapsed lung, fractured ribs and a lacerated liver, having to undergo costly medical treatment.

No charges were brought against the officer after a Mississippi grand jury found that he did not engage in criminal activity in December.

Murry’s family have brought a $5m civil lawsuit against Sgt Capers, the city of Indianola and its police chief, for the officer’s alleged “reckless disregard” for the Murrys’ rights and safety.
