Waste Watch: Taxpayers’ footing the bill for Sir Keir’s ideological mire

Welcome back to Waste Watch with Dia Chakravarty.

I have written about foreign aid and, more precisely, about UNRWA before, but the topic deserves another visit this week.

The Government has just committed an additional £7 million to the controversial UN agency.

Following the claim that employees of UNRWA had actively taken part in the massacre of its citizens on October 7 and the violence that followed, the UK along with some other Western countries had suspended funding the organisation.

UNRWA insist that only a small percentage of its staff have been “identified as being implicated in breach of neutrality allegations”, however Israeli politicians - even those opposed to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu - maintain that “UNRWA employees not only collaborate with Hamas, but were involved in the murder, kidnapping and rape of Jews on October 7, and they continue to assist Hamas in the war against Israel to this day.”

When Labour came to power in July, that decision to suspend funding was promptly reversed. A commitment for additional funds has now been announced.

Dazzling photos of the King and the Queen receiving the Qatari Royal family with its entourage have featured heavily in the news. The middle eastern kingdom has famously played host to Hamas’s political wing for over a decade and provided a safe haven for its leaders.
In a poignant juxtaposition, another more sombre visit from the region is also taking place this week.

Mandy Damari is in London to remind the world that her daughter, 28-year-old British-Israeli Emily Damari, has been held by Hamas for over a year now. The terrorists shot Emily’s dog dead in her arms, leaving her with gunshot wounds to her hand and her leg, before taking her from her home in Southern Israel on October 7 last year.
