The Hollywood actor Val Kilmer, best known for his work in Top Gun, Batman Forever and The Doors, has died aged 65.
Kilmer died on Tuesday night in Los Angeles surrounded by family and friends, his daughter, Mercedes, said. She added that the cause of death was pneumonia.
The actor was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014 but later recovered after receiving chemotherapy and trachea surgery.
After starting out as a stage actor, Kilmer rose to fame in the 1980s after roles in Top Secret! and Real Genius by starring as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky alongside Tom Cruise in the smash hit Top Gun.
Kilmer’s final acting role was in the 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick, in which his real-life cancer diagnosis and tracheostomy was written into the character.
Speaking about the cameo, Cruise said: “That was pretty emotional… I’ve known Val for decades, and for him to come back and play that character… he’s such a powerful actor that he instantly became that character again.”
