The Kurdish-led force controlling north-east Syria says it has reached a ceasefire with Turkish-backed fighters after the US stepped in to mediate a deal.

The Syrian National Army (SNA), a Turkish- backed coalition of disparate groups, attacked the city of Manbij, around 40km from the Turkish border, soon after the fall of the Assad regime.

At least 218 people have been killed in clashes between its fighters and the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which has occupied Manbij for eight years since taking it from Islamic State.

On Wednesday, Mazloum Abdi, the head of SDF, said that his fighters would withdraw from the area as soon as possible as their goal was to achieve a ceasefire across the whole of Syria.

“We have reached a ceasefire agreement in Manbij via US mediation,” he said.
