Ukraine war latest: Poland scrambles jets as Russian strikes threaten airspace

Poland was forced to scramble its aircraft after Russian air strikes targeting western Ukraine threatened the Nato country’s airspace.

All of Ukraine was under air raid sirens from 3.30am GMT as Russia launched a wave of missiles and drones at Kyiv and other major cities.

“The air alert continues. Stay in shelters until the danger passes,” said the Kyiv region’s military administration.

A 44-year-old woman was injured and several houses damaged near to the capital, while two people were killed and six injured in the Sumy region overnight, according to local officials. The full scale of the aerial attack is not yet clear.

It was launched just hours after Donald Trump promised that Russia was going “all-out” to end the war as he met with Emmanuel Macron to discuss European proposals for peace.

With growing fears of transatlantic rift and fraying support from Washington, the French president warned Mr Trump that a deal would not survive without American “backup” and substantial security guarantees.
