Ukraine’s military said it has “severely damaged” a large ferry close to Crimea that was being used to transport military equipment to Russian forces on the occupied peninsula.
It called the ship “the third and last railway ferry that Russia had in that area” and posted footage of black smoke rising above a vessel on fire.
The attack, which took place in the early hours of Tuesday, killed one and wounded four, local governor Veniamin Kondratyev said on Telegram.
The ferry had been moored in the southern Russian port of Kavkaz in the Krasnodar region, just seven miles from the 12-mile Kerch Bridge, the only direct land link between Russia and Crimea.
Ukraine’s General Staff said its navy in coordination with other forces “inflicted significant damage on the enemy’s cargo ship Slavyanin” which had been used to “transport railway carriages, vehicles and containers for military purposes.”
