Russia launched a salvo of missiles at Ukrainian cities early on Tuesday, killing at least five people and injuring 40 more.
At least 10 explosions were heard in the capital Kyiv as air raid sirens were sounded shortly before 6am local time.
Vitali Klitschko, the city’s mayor, said a “non-residential building” was ablaze, while a fire also broke out in “several apartments”.
An unexploded warhead was discovered in an apartment, which has since been evacuated, he added.
At least 18 people were injured in Kyiv and one woman killed, according to the city’s military administration.
Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, was also struck, with initial reports suggesting several residential buildings were damaged and a gas pipe fire triggered by the strikes.
Two women, aged 56 and 40, were reportedly killed, while 35 people were hospitalised, including children aged 10 and 12.
Pavlohrad’s Governor Serhii Lysak reported that at least one person was killed and another injured in strikes in the central Ukrainian city.
Ihor Klymenko, Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs, said five people had been killed and more than 40 injured in total.
