Ukraine will present the Biden administration with a list of targets it wants to strike inside Russia in another bid to push the US to lift restrictions on the use of American weapons against Moscow.
Two senior Ukrainian officials - the head of the president’s office and defence minister - will travel to Washington on Friday to “provide a list of priority targets, without which it will be difficult to change the course of the war in Ukraine’s favour,” a Ukrainian MP told CNN.
It comes after Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday that lifting restrictions on using US weapons would end the war sooner “for Ukraine and the world as a whole”.
Western weapons have been used in Ukraine’s Kursk offensive, including British Challenger 2 tanks and US-made Himars, but there are fears that allowing Kyiv to use long-range missiles could provoke a wider war with Russia.
On Tuesday, The Telegraph reported that the UK backs the use of Storm Shadow missiles by Ukraine in Russia but will not publicly call for the move amid concern it would provoke a row with the US.
The use of the weapons, which can avoid enemy radar and hit precise targets up to 190 miles away, requires permission from Washington given their reliance on classified US systems.
