Ukraine-Russia war latest: Ukraine agrees 30-day ceasefire in return for US weapons

Ukraine has said it is ready to agree to a proposed 30-day ceasefire after the US said it would resume weapons shipments.

The US will “immediately lift the pause on intelligence sharing and resume security assistance to Ukraine”, the countries said in a joint statement following Tuesday’s meeting.

Ukraine also “expressed readiness to accept the U.S. proposal to enact an immediate, interim 30-day ceasefire, which can be extended by mutual agreement of the parties, and which is subject to acceptance and concurrent implementation by the Russian Federation,” the statement said.

“The United States will communicate to Russia that Russian reciprocity is the key to achieving peace,” it said.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, said Ukraine accepted the US proposal for a “complete” 30-day ceasefire.

He said the Ukrainian delegation had proposed “silence in the sky – missiles, bombs, long-range drones, and silence at sea” but the US had suggested the ceasefire stretch to “the entire front line”.

“Ukraine accepts this proposal, we consider it positive, we are ready to take such a step. The United States of America must convince Russia to do this”, he said.

On Tuesday Marco Rubio, Donald Trump’s secretary of state, national security advisor Mike Walz and Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff Andriy Yermak, met for more than eight hours.

Speaking after the talks, Mr Rubio said they would take the offer to Moscow and “the ball is now in Russia’s court”.

Mr Zelensky thanked Mr Trump for the “constructiveness of our teams’ conversations”.

The potential ceasefire agreement comes after Ukraine launched its largest ever drone attack against Russia on Monday night, killing at least three people and causing severe damage to apartment blocks and cars in Moscow.
