Donald Trump has accused Volodymyr Zelensky of “harming” peace negotiations and “prolonging the killing field” by rejecting a US proposal to recognise Crimea as part of Russia.
The US president said his Ukrainian counterpart did not have to formally recognise occupied Crimea as Russian - as Washington is prepared to do - but must accept that he has lost the territory.
“The statement made by Zelenskyy today will do nothing but prolong the “killing field,” and nobody wants that! We are very close to a Deal, but the man with “no cards to play” should now, finally, GET IT DONE,” Mr Trump wrote on Truth Social this afternoon.
Mr Zelensky said on Tuesday that Ukraine could not legally recognise Crimea as part of Russia, and said: “There’s nothing to talk about here.”
Talks broke down in London on Wednesday over Mr Trump’s seven-point plan to end the war, which included the US recognising Crimea, which was invaded by Russia in 2014.
JD Vance, the vice president, said the US was willing to “walk away” if Kyiv and Moscow did not accept Washington’s proposal. Downing Street said it would not walk away from talks and backed Ukraine.
