The UK and France are pushing for a ‘Europe Plus’ coalition to protect Ukraine in the event of a peace deal.
Canada and Turkey are involved in discussions about joining Sir Keir Starmer’s so-called “coalition of the willing”, which could see soldiers being sent to Ukraine to enforce a deal.
The plan is the UK and France’s response to a series of private requests made by Donald Trump following his public row with Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office on Friday, Bloomberg reports.
The US president wants Mr Zelensky to apologise and declare that he wants peace before returning to the White House to sign a minerals agreement.
Mr Trump is also unwilling to commit to backing European troops who are sent to Ukraine until Europe produces a plan to stop the fighting.
On Sunday, Emmanuel Macron suggested Britain and France had drawn up a plan for a one-month truce in Ukraine “in the air, at sea”. However, the UK Government said this morning no agreement had been reached.
