David Lammy has vowed “100 per cent” co-operation with the International Criminal Court (ICC) after it issued an arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu.
In his first intervention on the row in the Commons, the Foreign Secretary said the UK would help to ensure the court was able to carry out its work “without obstruction”.
The remarks appear to raise the prospect of an arrest on British soil, given that the UK is jointly responsible for enforcing warrants issued by the Hague-based court.
Downing Street last week refused to rule out that the Israeli prime minister would be arrested if he was to come to the UK, saying it respected the “independence” of the ICC.
The Foreign Office has since deferred the matter to the UK courts, claiming any decision on whether to arrest Mr Netanyahu would be a matter for the judiciary, rather than ministers.
