Almost a month’s worth of rain is set to fall in 12 hours as sunshine makes way for thunderstorms across the UK.

The Met Office issued new weather warnings for storms and rain on Monday, but the country is still likely to experience weather and temperatures warmer than Monaco.

In West Suffolk, the mercury is forecast to top 32C on Monday. But other areas will see downpours, such as the West Country where a month’s worth of rain is predicted to fall until 9am.

Dan Stroud, a Met Office meteorologist, said: “On Monday, we’re expecting a fine and hot start, temperatures rising fairly quickly during the course of the morning under strong early summer sunshine and that’s likely to spark a few thundery showers.

“Parts of Wales and England will see 30mm of rain in an hour; 60mm to 80mm in some spots. North parts of Northern Ireland, south-west Scotland and the Highlands could see 20mm to 30mm of rain in an hour during the thunderstorms, and 40mm to 50mm in some spots.”
