Turkey’s threat to the Kurds in Syria is existential

The fall of the regime of Bashar al-Assad has opened the door for a remarkable change in Syria. Across the world, news of the tyrannical regime’s fall has been met with scenes of jubilation, and the hope that better days lie ahead for Syria’s people.

But the regime’s fall is not the end of the story. In the north of the country a second civil war looks set to ignite between the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA), and the American-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), who are mostly ethnic Kurds.

Turkey has made no secret of the fact that it will never accept a Kurdish quasi-statelet ruled by the Kurdish PYD party (which it considers a terrorist organisation) appearing along its border.

And with Assad gone, the Turks feel the time is right to ensure that this Kurdish entity can never emerge.
