As Donald Trump’s tariffs wreak havoc on our pensions, investments, businesses and livelihoods, some conservatives may be cursing the Republicans, and thinking: “Come back, Democrats. All is forgiven.”
But not me. In fact, this economic catastrophe – slightly tempered by his concession of a 90-day pause for most countries – is making me despise the Democrats all the more.
Last year they spent their entire campaign warning us that a second Trump presidency would be a danger to democracy, to global order, to life on Earth as we know it. Fine. But if they really and truly believed it, why on earth did they work so hard to ensure his victory?
They may not have meant to. But they did. First, through their pigheaded insistence on sticking with Joe Biden, long after it was obvious that he was no longer up to the job.
For at least two years, baffled observers asked: “Why on earth are the Democrats still so loyal to an elderly man who barely seems to recall his own name?” To which a cynical person might have replied: “Because his helpless confusion suits them down to the ground. They can take advantage of it, by getting him to approve all kinds of Left-wing lunacy. Whereas a leader who retained a firm grasp on his marbles would have sent them and their idiotic ideas packing.”
But even if that cynical voice is wrong, and the Democrats had no such ulterior motive, the fact remains that they did stick with Biden. Right up until June last year, when an embarrassing live TV debate meant that this delusional charade had to end, and they needed a replacement – just five months before election day.
And so who did they choose, without even pausing to consider alternatives? Kamala Harris: the vice president with the lowest approval ratings ever. And who was on record as spouting all manner of voter-repelling wokery. Such as her belief, voiced in 2019, that US taxpayers should be made to fund “gender-affirming surgery” for illegal immigrants.
In short: she was Trump’s dream opponent. As was obvious to everyone except, apparently, the Democrats. Incredibly, they’d managed to replace Biden with the only person even likelier to lose.
This is why I blame them, for the chaos that’s unfolding now. Because Trump could never have done it without them.
