Trump will send 1,000 troops to Louisiana in crime crackdown

Donald Trump is planning to send 1,000 troops into Louisiana as he rolls out his crime crackdown across the country, documents show.

The Pentagon has drafted a proposal for the Louisiana National Guard troops to deploy to cities including New Orleans and Baton Rouge to support local law enforcement, according to The Washington Post.

Among the documents, sent by Pete Hegseth, defence secretary, to Pam Bondi, the attorney general, and Kristi Noem, the homeland security secretary, is an unsigned, undated memo boasting of the “unique advantage” of the Pentagon’s proposal.

The memo added that the deployment could take effect so long as Jeff Landry, the Republican governor of Louisiana who has expressed support for the idea, asks the federal government for assistance.

It comes after Mr Trump on Friday announced plans to mobilise the National Guard in Memphis, warning that crime is out of control.

Calling the city “deeply troubled,” he told Fox News the mayor and Tennessee governor were happy with the action, which could include the “National Guard and anybody else we need”.

As with New Orleans, Memphis is a city in a Republican state led by a Democratic mayor.
