Donald Trump has weighed in on the row over Cracker Barrel’s redesign, saying the brand should return to its original logo.

The chain of gift shops and restaurants was accused of cutting ties with its heritage to “appease trendsetters” after revealing the new design on Thursday.

Shares of Cracker Barrel fell by $4.22 (£3.13), or 7.2 per cent to $54.80 (£40.64) on Thursday, a market value loss of $94 million (£69.72m). Shares have since improved, however.

The new emblem, featuring just the southern-themed chain’s name, was missing the image of an older, dungaree-clad gentleman leaning against a barrel and the slogan “Old Country Store”.

The company said the new design “is now rooted even more closely to the iconic barrel shape and word mark that started it all.”

The company’s name is derived from barrels themselves, which were used to deliver crackers to old country stores.

“People would gather around them to discuss the news of the day,” according to the Cracker Barrel website.
