Donald Trump poked fun at Justin Trudeau during a hot mic moment at the Gaza ceasefire summit in Egypt.
Following his address, Mr Trump shared a light-hearted interaction with Mark Carney, the Canadian prime minister, while his microphone was still on and cameras were still rolling.
“Well, I’m glad you upgraded me to president,” Mr Carney quipped before laughing.
Mr Trump responded by playfully slapping Mr Carney’s arm, shielding his mouth and saying: “At least I didn’t say governor.”
The comments appeared to be a joke at the expense of Justin Trudeau, the former Canadian prime minister, whom Mr Trump mercilessly mocked during his final months in office, repeatedly calling him “governor Trudeau” and threatening to make Canada America’s “51st state”.
Mr Trudeau’s ailing poll ratings exacerbated by a trade war with the US caused by Mr Trump’s tariffs ultimately forced him to step down as prime minister in January.
Conversely, the president’s jibes bolstered support for Mark Carney, whose pledge to fight back against Mr Trump’s threats saw him jump in the polls to win Canada’s March election.
