Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky plan to sign the much-debated rare earth minerals deal tonight, sources have claimed.
The US president told his advisers that he wants to announce the agreement has been signed in his highly-anticipated address to Congress this evening, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.
The fractious deal, which Ukraine had agreed to last week, was put on hold after Mr Trump and Mr Zelensky’s “regrettable” row in the Oval Office last week, and was left unsigned.
The Ukrainian president earlier today said Kyiv was now “ready” to sign the agreement, calling it a “step toward” securing “solid security agreements” from the Trump administration after they suspended all US military aid.
The proposal, which has been contested for weeks and is a particularly sore spot between Mr Trump and Mr Zelensky, would grant the US half of Ukraine’s revenues from its critical minerals as payback for US military support.
Mr Trump is set to speak at 9pm local time to 2am GMT. You can watch the speech live on our stream here.
