Donald Trump is planning a summit with Xi Jinping in China within 100 days of taking office, his aides have said.
It comes as Mr Trump is grappling with the fallout of a ban on Chinese social media app TikTok, which came into effect on Sunday.
Users who reported being unable to access the app online were told: “Sorry, TikTok isn’t available right now,” alongside a message about Mr Trump’s plan to “work with us on a solution to reinstate” the app. The app was banned over concerns that China could access data of millions of American users.
Elon Musk on Sunday said he was against the ban. He also hinted that lifting the ban could be tied to open access for his X platform in China.
“The current situation where TikTok is allowed to operate in America, but X is not allowed to operate in China is unbalanced,” he said.
Mr Trump and president Xi spoke on the phone for the first time on Friday, discussing trade, fentanyl, and TikTok, according to a readout. The president-elect told president Xi he was “looking forward to meeting [him] as soon as possible,” according to China’s account of the call, sources told the Wall Street Journal
